Overview
Danni J is an Exeter-based contemporary artist specialising in hyperrealistic charcoal drawings and intricate pen-and-ink dotwork stippling. Her originals take dozens or hundreds of hours to craft, building deep contrast and dramatic chiaroscuro layer by layer. She needed a digital platform that matched the tactile gravitas of her physical artwork—moving beyond flat web grids to create a genuinely immersive exhibition feel.
We designed and developed an interactive 3D virtual gallery where visitors can step inside a purpose-built exhibition room, walk the space at standing eye level, and approach individual pieces to inspect fine stipple textures and charcoal gradients under gallery spotlights. Alongside the virtual room, the site provides a full catalog of selected originals and limited-edition prints, detailed artist background on her technique and seal of authenticity, and friction-free commission pathways.
Key challenges
- ·Translating high-contrast, detail-dense charcoal and stippling artwork to digital screens without loss of fidelity or slow load times
- ·Building a fluid 3D virtual gallery room that runs seamlessly across desktop and mobile devices without requiring extra plugins or apps
- ·Designing intuitive multi-modal exploration (WASD/click-to-walk exploration alongside guided piece-by-piece step controls)
- ·Structuring clear conversion paths for high-value original commissions and print purchases while preserving the gallery aesthetic
- ·Balancing dark luxury exhibition aesthetics with accessible typography, responsive touch controls, and fast initial page loads
Solutions implemented
- ·Built a lightweight 3D exhibition space in Three.js and WebGL with pre-baked architectural lighting and real-time spotlight focus
- ·Implemented smooth camera transitions allowing visitors to step up directly to any framed artwork and examine high-resolution details with curator wall text
- ·Engineered responsive dual controls supporting keyboard navigation, canvas drag-to-look, floor click-to-walk, and step-through buttons
- ·Created an editorial Selected Works archive and dedicated About the Artist section detailing materials, cotton rag paper, and embossed seals
- ·Optimized image delivery using modern WebP formats and progressive blur placeholders to achieve instant load times
